Embung Nglanggeran geomembrane constructed to collect rainwater for agricultural water supply

Tinuku ~ Embung Nglanggeran geomembrane constructed applying the technique to supply water for plantations and flower gardens. Government Gunung Kidul designing artificial lake covering an area of 1000 square meters to collect rain water in ancient mountain geological park sites to irrigate cocoa, durian, longan and rambutan.

Gunung Kidul District Government cut the top of the hill to build a mini reservoir 1000 square meters in the ancient mountain sites, in Dusun Nglanggeran Wetan, Patuk, Gunung Kidul. Geomembrane system on the base layer is used for watering cocoa, durian, longan and rambutan garden covering an area of 20 hectares around the site.

Mountainous northern part of the region which has the highest rainfall than central and southern regions. Rainfall of about 3,011 mm per year in the north has not been used optimally, while in other areas on central and southern the drought is always hit every year.

Mount Nglanggeran is an ancient volcano on the seabed that was lifted to surface around the calendar geological 60 million years ago as the dinosaurs extinction (the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction event). Geological garden landscape formed from magma with elements of frozen lava, andesite, andesite breccia and sediment.

Large rocks and form a row of towering landscape "Sewu Mountains" as a geological park is very beautiful. One of the peaks is Gedhe Peak height of about 700 meters above sea level with cylindrical shape and has a cone of about 48 hectares.

Embung Nglanggeran built in Gandu Peak at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level and slope of 40 percent. A lake of 1 hectare harnessing gravity system, rectangular shaped asymmetrical 70 meters long and 37 meters wide with water depth of 4 meters using geomembrane system on the base layer.

"The garden here is in desperate need water so the reservoir was made. So both rainy season and dry season, the plant 20 hectares always get water," said Sudiono, chairman of Farmers Group Association (Gapotan) in Gunung Kidul.

The engineers do the ground work with capacity of 7,200 cubic meters on land area of 2,304 square meters. Construction begins with the mobilization and demobilization of heavy equipment, striping, cut and fill, finishing and smoothing porch on each side, geomembrane installation, finishing reservoirs and pipelines to garden.

"Embung Nglanggeran succeed. We are building two more and more for the future," said Budi Martono, secretary of the Government of Gunung Kidul.
