The power button patent is submitted in mid 2015, while Sony launches the Xperia Z5 by the end of 2015 using the fingerprint scanner feature on the power button. But Sony has disabled that functionality in the United States to reduce the possibility of patent disputes.

The fingerprint scanner system on the power button promises smaller structures than ever before and allows it to be mounted on buttons even on the side of the phone with a thin bezel. Apple gets patent for fingerprint power button scanning

The power button can be positioned above or the original power button of iPhone 5 and seems to be another option, but placement also allows for other alternatives. This technology can be covered with protective glass or even sapphire.

Other Apple patents show biometric sensors that lurk beneath the touch screen through transparent biometric finger sensing pixels and acoustic imaging systems.
