His plan to build a colony on Mars was a "reserve" plan when Earth came to its end. Mars as the primary goal because the Red Planet has much in common with Earth, is rich in natural resources and is most likely to live up to now.

"Speaking of SpaceX architecture on Mars, I want to really have a way for everyone to go there," Musk said.

But a recent study found radiation on Mars was higher than previously thought. There are still many things that need to be researched by humans before sending civilization to the Red Planet.

The study titled "Making Humanity a Multi-Planetary Species" in detail discusses methods that can be taken to Mars, how to build a spaceship to it, travel paths and so forth. If it goes according to plan, the first flight possibilities will be made in 2023.

"If we can push the cost up to the equivalent average price of a home in the United States, I think the opportunity to create a self-sustaining civilization on Mars is very high," Musk said.

Some steps to reduce costs to Mars are that spacecraft must be re-used, should be able to refuel in orbit and re-fuel on Mars with the fuel produced by the plant on the planet.

An independent city requires one million people. Musk estimates the spacecraft will send 100 inhabitants every 2 years. An aircraft from Earth takes an average of 115 days to reach Mars after flight tests begin in 2020.

"The journey should be fun, it should not feel cramped or boring, you can play games without gravity, you can hover. There are movies, speeches, cabins and restaurants. That would be a fun trip," Musk said.
