NASA X-57 Maxwell Era Baru Pesawat Terbang Elektrik Tahun 2018

Tinuku Info ~ NASA ingin menerbangkan pesawat terbang elektrik di udara tahun 2018. Para insinyur fokus teknologi listrik dan hibrida untuk pesawat komersial masa depan.

Mengikuti jejak program dongeng roket tahun 1940-an, insinyur NASA kini meletakkan rencana dengan sentuhan baru bagi masa depan era penerbangan bertenaga baterai. Modifikasi desain X-57 yang diusulkan didukung 14 motor listrik dan ribuan sel lithium-ion seukuran jari.

Insinyur NASA mengatakan desain baru bertenaga baterai harus berfungsi sebagai langkah pertama menuju era baru pembaharuan moda transportasi publik pesawat terbang semakin lebih hijau, lebih tenang dan lebih efisien.

"Kami bisa memperbaiki pesawat state of the art dengan mengadopsi teknologi propulsi listrik," kata Sean Clarke, peneliti utama proyek.

X-57 adalah terbaru dalam garis panjang pesawat eksperimental yang dikembangkan NASA dan pendahulunya yaitu National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) pada tahun 1947 ketika percontohan legendaris Chuck Yeager pertama memecahkan hambatan suara di Bell X-1.

Proyek skala kecil membandingkan banyak upaya sebelumnya seperti X-30, tetapi mereka berharap dapat menelurkan solusi yang mampu diterapkan lebih umum dalam berbagai jenis pesawat. NASA juga berharap membawa teknologi baru ke pasar komersial pada tahun 2035.

"Untuk 10 tahun ke depan banyak teknologi jatuh tempo ke tingkat di mana penggunaan dalam skala penerbangan umum," kata Clarke.

Kunci terletak pada evolusi baterai. Sepertiga berat mesin ganda TECNAM P2006T terletak pada kemasan baterai. NASA bekerja sama dengan kontraktor baterai Electric Power Systems mempekerjakan 18650 sel lithium-ion komersial dengan energi spesifik sekitar 150-200 W-hr/kg.

"Kami tidak memiliki akses ke teknologi ruang mewah. Teknologi baterai ini sama seperti yang digunakan industri otomotif," kata Clarke.

Baterai menggerakkan 14 motor listrik yang dirancang dalam sayap panjang. Dua magnet motor DC sekitar 60 kW masing-masing di ujung sayap memberi propulsi pada kecepatan tinggi. Dua belas motor yang lebih kecil masing-masing 11 kW mendorong pesawat saat lepas landas, menukik dan mendarat.

Insinyur NASA bekerja dengan kontraktor swasta. Empirical Systems Aerospace berfungsi sebagai kontraktor utama, Electric Power Systems bertanggung jawab untuk baterai, Joby Aviation merancang motor dan pengendali, Scaled Composites mengintegrasi sistem listrik dan Xperimental LLC untuk sayap.

Produksi X-57 direncanakan tahun 2018. Jika kepadatan energi baterai terus meningkatkan, para insinyur berharap produsen penerbangan umum mulai menerapkan teknologi baru dalam satu dekade kemudian atau pesawat hybrid yaitu tetap menggunakan bahan bakar konvensional hanya saat lepas landas dan mendarat.
