Tinuku ~ In simply put, Rumah Gadang is Minangkabau traditional stilt house in the highlands of West Sumatra as a residential house owned by large families or maternal lineage lysed by matrilineal system.

The house divided in to the head, body and legs basically formed from simple geometry, but its implementation is unique. House serves family residence once a symbol presence of people in the village and center of harmony.

Bonding system on the roof structure and timber connection is not rigid, so the longhouse more flexible and have high tolerance for earthquakes. Buffalo horn-shaped roof, bamboo and hilly nature animates the architectural design.

Building resembles an inverted trapezoid representation of a sailboat. House sits on stone slabs that are not planted in the ground, but exposed column on surface of the pole propped on stone that serves as foundation.

System column structure and building materials connected or assembled without nails. When earthquake hit, you get a frame house does not have broken because structure can move like a hinge with some tolerance.

Columns in longhouse using hard wood and tree branches intact. Under the house is used as a livestock or exterior barn to store farm equipment or fagots. The height can be adjusted based on interest.

Entire basement can covered with bamboo directly at time of closing of the vault room. Floor system using wooden cross to follow home sheet. If there is a pavilion so the floor can be exalted.

In the original Rumah Gadang floor is not made of wood, but bamboo is split into flat so it does not use nails during installation. Implementation using rattan rod has been cleaved to bind so the floor is not disintegrating.

Room divider placed in one room to another as a wall or psychological barrier in form of a line made of wood on floor. Grace walls of house enlarged to roof to prevent exposure spatters.

Roof construction using wood tree trunks as pillars make up shape of curved purlins and then installed lath bamboo tied using rattan sticks. Bonding system on roof structure and timber connection is not rigid so it is more flexible and high tolerance.

All boards, frames, columns, doors and windows carved all so carving is a craft dominant in Minangkabau society. The style carving variety of themes about roots of leafy vines, flowers and fruits.

Variations in composition of root carving motifs are carved with patterns of variation circular core, lined, coincide, overlapped and adjust shape of pattern to symbolize the philosophy and practice of everyday life.
