Sono Motors unveils Sion solar car for $18,000

Sono Motors GmbH launches Sion as the world's first solar powered vehicle. Startups headquartered in Munich launched a prototype electric and solar car and will be delivered to consumers by 2019. The mileage is 100 miles by 30 kWh battery and technically not fully solar-powered cars, but the solar cells integrated in Sion's body generate enough electricity to add 18 Miles per day.

Laurin, Jona and Navina have a passion for future mobility and sustainable energy-free fossil fuel air pollutants. The three young technology entrepreneurs spent three years developing, constructing, and testing prototypes of futuristic cars in Laurin's garage and in January 2016 they founded the company Sono Motors GmbH.

In July they launched a crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo to raise the funds needed to build some prototypes for a test drive. The campaign was a huge success with over €600,000 and continues to increase with more than 1,100 pre-orders.

"Thanks to the technology of bidirectional charging the Sion can not only generate but also provide energy. This feature turns the car into a mobile power station. Using a household plug, all common electronic devices with up to 2,7kW can be powered by the Sion," the company said.

"You can plug in your electronic devices and power them with the Sions battery. Over a type 2 plug the Sion can provide even more power with up to 7,6 kW," company said.

Sion has two models is the Urban model for €12,000 with a 14.4 kWh battery to provide a range of 50-60 miles and a £16,000 (US$18,720) Extender model equipped with a 30 kWh battery that provides about 110-120 miles. "The Sion is equipped with 330 integrated solar cells, which recharge the battery through the power of the sun. To protect them from harmful environmental influences we covered the solar cells with polycarbonate," company said.

"It is shatterproof, light and particularly weather resistant. Under proper conditions the solar cells generate enough energy, to cover 30 kilometers per day with the Sion. We call this system viSono," company said.
