Daimler AG on Thursday said United Parcel Service Inc is the first commercial customer of electric trucks in the United States called the start of a war in which medium-sized heavyweight and heavy-duty truck makers will win the future market. Big players like Daimler's Mitsubishi Fuso, Cummins, Arrival, Ford, Navistar International Corp., Tesla Inc. and other startups are racing to overcome the challenge of replacing diesel engines into batteries as a result of regulation to reduce carbon dioxide and soot pollution.

"The game has started," said Daimler Trucks Asia chief Mark Llistosella.

Fuso eCanter is a relatively small urban truck, but the company says the Class 7 and larger electric trucks have been prepared and will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next month. Daimler says UPS has used three eCanter trucks.

Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, has also announced the company will produce an electric truck under the Semi brand that is expected to offer a range of up to 300 miles in single battery charge. Tesla has also been working on self-driving truck.
