Samsung obtains autonomous vehicle test in California

The technology giant headquartered in Suwon obtains an autonomous car test pass on public roads in California. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd announced Thursday that it has received permission to test its own vehicle in California as an important step by the world's largest smartphone manufacturer after Apple Inc. obtained a permit four months ago.

Samsung in May also has received permission by the South Korean government to test autonomous vehicles equipped with its own branded sensor and software systems. The company plans to use the vehicle to develop self-driving car algorithms that run in inclement weather.

Samsung said the test was an attempt to pursue a smarter and safer transportation future. Samsung Group is a large conglomerate that makes washing machines, heavy machinery to pharmaceutical says it does not plan to enter the car manufacturing business.

The company, founded in 1969, has various opportunities in for the growth of self-driving car business. The company purchased Harman International Industries which created an audio system earlier this year for US$8 billion as part of a roadmap developing connected car technology.
