Putin: The nation that leads AI and drone will rule the world

Vladimir Putin says the nation that leads artificial intelligence (AI) will become the ruler of the world. The Russian president on Friday said ahead to the students that any country leading the AI research will dominate global affairs. AI will help improve the economy of all countries, from heavy industry to medical research, but technology will also be useful in warfare.

"Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind. It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world," says Putin.

China and the United States are the two main candidates for which China recently announced its ambition to become a global leader in AI research by 2030. Many analysts predict the United States will be lagging behind, primarily due to budget-cutting policies of basic science and technology research.

AI technology will also be useful in warfare to develop cyber weapons and control autonomous tools such as a flock of low-cost quadcopters to use the 'brain' and simultaneously to attack opponents.

"The movement of the eyes can be used to operate various systems, and also there are possibilities to analyze human behavior in extreme situations, including in space," Putin says.

The president also foresaw the future war will be controlled by countries that use unmanned aircraft. AI arms race does not have to be a win-lose scenario. Putin said Russia does not want to see a nation monopolize this technology

"If we become leaders in this area, we will share this know-how with entire world, the same way we share our nuclear technologies today," Putin said.
